    Helpful Information on Suffolk, VA
Things You Need To Know Before Moving To Suffolk Virginia

Are you considering moving to Suffolk, Virginia? If so, there are a few things you should know that will probably raise your level of excitement for your upcoming move. Firstly, it is all about the peanuts, as you will soon see. In addition, this Tidewater town has plenty of other things to offer as well. Let's take a look at what makes Suffolk, VA, such a great place to move to.

You Can Meet Mr Peanut and Attend the Peanut Festival

First of all, you must visit the Planters Nut and Chocolate Company. It opened its doors in 1912 and it is thanks to this company that the town was named "Peanut Capital of the World." At the corner of Main and Washington, you will be able to see the famous statue of Mr. Peanut himself. Unsurprisingly, the center itself is one of the most popular attractions for tourists and residents alike. If you like things with peanut flavors, then you will absolutely love going here.

Additionally, there is the yearly Peanut Festival, which is a huge event. Some 125,000 visitors attend this each year, which is more than the number of people who live in Suffolk. The festival has rides, a parade, music, games, a demolition derby, a motorcycle rally, the crowning of the Peanut Queen, a peanut butter sculpting contest and more food than you could eat in a lifetime. The food isn't just peanuts either. There are chicken wings, shrimp, goobers, barbecues, and more.

The Swamp Is Absolutely Amazing

Swamps sound gloomy and scary, but the Suffolk swamp is just a huge (100,000 acres!) opportunity for outdoor fun. You can go fishing, canoe paddling, wildlife spotting, birdwatching and more. It is home to aquatic animals such as catfish and land animals such as bears.

There Are Lots to Do for Those Who Like Spooky Things

If you like a bit of a fright-night, then Suffolk is the place to be. It is said to be one of the most haunted towns in the country. Indeed, the tourism division officially sponsors the Legends of Main Street walk, which is a ghost walk. You will be escorted by costumed guides who go through sites such as Riddick's Folly, the Old Nansemond County Court Courthouse and the Cedar Hill Cemetery. Be sure to bring all your ghost hunting equipment to these events - you may be able to prove that there is life after death.

Ceder Hill Cemetery is the highlight of you ghost walk. It was established around 1802 and you will be able to spot the bronze monument for the Confederate dead here. Additionally, there is still a fountain inside the cemetery where horses who pulled the hearses were given water to drink. You can take part in lantern tours all year long, where you will also have the opportunity to learn about the symbols found on the monuments and Victorian tombstones. Unfortunately, all of these have to be done before dusk, at which time it closes its gates.

After your ghost walk, you could consider visiting the city's most famous haunted pub. The Hotel Elliot, as it was known in the 1920s, but is now known as the Suffolk Towers apartment block. Residents have long complained about the ghostly goings on in the building and claim that it is the spirits of old hotel guests who still roam the halls. On the ground floor of the building, you can enjoy an amazing meal at Baron's Pub. The burgers here are so tall that you couldn't possibly fit a full bit in your mouth, but that doesn't need to stop you from trying.

It Is the Place to Be for State of the Art Technology

Suffolk is known for its high tech industry, which started in the 90s. This was because JFCOM started a facility here. They are no longer there, but there are various other important players in their place.

You Can Attend the Festival of Flight

The Festival of Flight is all about airplanes. This festival takes place in the spring of each year and is absolutely fantastic. You can see all sorts of show planes, including antique, homemade, restored war and classic planes. You will be mesmerized by the Tiger Airshows stunt pilots, who will truly make their air crafts fly. Additionally, if you prefer keeping both feet on the ground, you can enjoy the motorcycle and car show.
